Scattered snow squalls will create dangerous travel conditions from the interior Northeast through northern and central New England through Friday. Snow squalls can bring sudden heavy snow, strong winds, snow-covered roads, and near-zero visibility. Upstate New York and New England may see multiple rounds today and again Friday. If you encounter a snow squall and cannot safely exit the roadway, slow down, turn on headlights and hazards, and avoid hard braking.
Dangerously cold Arctic air is spreading across the Great Plains, Midwest, and Eastern U.S. through the weekend. Gusty winds will produce life-threatening wind chills, falling below -50°F in the Northern Plains and below zero as far south as the Southern Plains, Mid-Mississippi Valley, and Mid-Atlantic. These conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Extreme cold warnings and advisories are in effect across much of these regions.
A major winter storm will develop Friday, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies and Plains into the Mid-South, then eastward into the Mid-Atlantic and New England this weekend. Crippling ice and sleet are expected across portions of the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley Friday, with significant ice accumulation, power outages, tree damage, and extremely hazardous or impassable roads. Ice impacts will shift east into parts of the Southeast, Tennessee Valley, and Mid-Atlantic over the weekend.
Drivers should plan ahead, monitor conditions closely, and shut down if travel becomes unsafe.

A winter storm system will impact the region Friday morning through much of the weekend. Travel over mountain passes could become difficult, so be sure to use caution and monitor the forecast. Winter Weather Advisories are in place for most mountain groups of southeast Utah and western Colorado for Friday and Saturday.
